Let me be perfectly clear. I am a DC man.
When I say that, I mean that in the great comic war, I have been firmly on the side of DC as long as I can remember. The first vintage comics I ever owned were old copies of the Justice League of America. I have very good knowledge of all DC comics since 1982, and after 2006 that knowledge becomes downright encyclopedic.
That is not to say that I was unaware of Marvel entirely. I saw some episodes of the Spider-Man cartoon (in its various incarnations), and Saban's Avengers cartoon. And sure, I watched X-Men the Animated Series, but not very often.
This has actually been an advantage in enjoying the Marvel movies. While many of my Marvel-loving friends were either praising or picking apart the movies based on how true they were to the comic books, I was just enjoying them as movies, having little prior knowledge of the characters beyond the basics.
But, well, the New 52 is losing me, and my friends keep talking about how much they like Marvel. So I am going to take the plunge. My way. Meaning I am going to go through the massive amounts of Marvel comics available as scans on DVD, and go through them, starting from when the modern Marvel age started in 1961.
I am intending to go through a month's worth of comics every week. And then blog about it in my irrepressibly sardonic post-modern method.
We will learn together. Assuming that, like me, you are ignorant of Marvel. If you know Marvel already, then you get to laugh at my ignorance. Ha ha.
